DIGITAL AGENT ENGINEERS SOLVE COMPLEX PUZZLES FOR OUR CUSTOMERS EVERY DAY. CAN YOU SOLVE THE PUZZLE WE CREATED FOR YOU?
You have a bag filled with 13 plain chips and 20 barbeque chips. You remove 2 without looking in the bag. If the chips are the same flavor, you place a barbeque chip back in the bag. If they are different flavors, you place a plain chip back in the bag. You continue this process until there is only 1 chip remaining in the bag. What flavor is it?
Let’s think about the three possible options for each round and see how it changes the totals of each chip type in the bag.
- Remove 2 plain, add 1 BBQ = -2 Plain, +1 BBQ
- Remove 2 BBQ, add 1 BBQ = -1 BBQ
- Remove 1 of each, add 1 plain = -1 BBQ
Notice that the total number of plain bags of chips in the big bag can only be reduced by 2 each round (it can’t be increased). Since we started with 13 plain bags of chips, this number can never be reduced to zero! (once there is only 1 plain bag left, no more can be removed) So the last bag of chips HAS to be plain.
